    Health/Science Editor

    Remote

Message Lab (www.messagelabmedia.com) is a content marketing agency that specializes in helping healthcare, science and nonprofit organizations. We work with top clients nationwide and we’re looking for an experienced, versatile editor with an uncompromising commitment to quality, who can mentor our writers and ensure that all content is top-notch.

    Role:

We translate complex information into language that’s accessible to a broad audience. This includes:

    • Web pages that describe medical conditions, treatments and hospital programs
    • Feature articles and blog posts about people who have benefitted from innovative medical care and research
    • Articles and web content that explain new procedures and medical protocols to doctors

Creating this content is a team effort that takes several drafts and revisions. The health/science editor guides writers through this process. This starts with providing big-picture feedback on where a piece of content is on- and off-target, and ends with line edits that make sure each piece is as polished as possible before a client sees it.

    Responsibilities

    • Help intake new writing projects, by:
      • Working with Message Lab’s content directors to understand client needs and goals
      • Reviewing and providing input on creative briefs and assignments, to ensure that writers are set up for success
    • Guide individual pieces of content by:
      • Providing developmental edits on a first draft, to help writers understand where they’re on track, where they’re off base and how to make adjustments
      • Reviewing successive drafts and providing feedback until those drafts deliver on the assignment’s goals
      • Making final language tweaks to make sure the piece meets our standard of creating exceptional content

    Qualifications:

    • A self-starter who thrives on working independently
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and switch seamlessly between them
    • An eagerness to collaborate
    • 5+ years of editing experience across digital and print channels
    • 2+ years of experience with medical and/or science content for consumer and professional audiences
    • A solid understanding of SEO best practices

    The qualities we look for:

    • Compassion: you understand writing is a team sport, and you support and inspire developing writers
    • Perseverance: When a project gets hard, you double down
    • Commitment to excellence: You won’t let subpar content leave your desk, even if that means rewriting some of it

    Why you should work here:

    • This will start as an hourly, contract position and could quickly evolve into a full-time, staff position for the right candidate. Here’s why you should join our team:
      • We’re growing fast, which means you can define how your role evolves.
      • We spend our days talking to some of the world’s most innovative physicians and researchers.
      • We have a free-form work environment that focuses on getting the job done right, not on when you’re at your desk. Do you work best when you can disappear for a weekday hike, ski session or to spend time at your kids’ school? Do you want to beat the crowds by working Sunday instead of Friday? Done!
      • We have a “vacation as-needed” policy, which means you can take time off when you need it, without worrying about whether you’ve used up your days.
      • Retirement plan with partial matching after one year of full-time employment
      • Profit sharing after one year of full-time employment
      • We offer a gold-level health plan and pay 100% of premiums for full-time employees.

    Are you the perfect fit?

We’d love to learn more about you. Please send us your resume, work sample and a cover letter that explains what inspires you and why you want to work with us.
